We’re not as unique as we think we are

I had an interesting conversation with a friend yesterday. It was a deep conversation about how he felt. He told me he was depressed and insecure of himself, having low confidence.

I asked him why he felt down. Was it because of looks? Because of his skills? His personality?

No. He said it was because he enjoyed something weird.

“What is it?” I asked.

“I enjoy imagining myself in sad situations, for example me being blind.”

Isn’t this normal? I don’t know, but I think I enjoy it too? It must have something to do with my ego - imagining being taken care of by everyone. Am I just weird, or am I normal? My friend thought he was the only one in the world enjoying to imagine things like that, but he’s not. I think I enjoy it too.

I recently read M. Scott Peck’s “The Road Less Travelled”, where it was mentioned that love is where one person sacrifices something of his or her own to nurture the spiritual growth of the other. This love, however, won’t exist unless the other partner returns with the same favor.
The term “ego boundaries” was mentioned; ego boundaries still exist within love, but all judgements are made within the ego boundaries. When a person experiences an orgasm, at the peak the partner loses his or her ego boundaries, and can therefore yell out “I love you” to a prostitute.
A part of our ego boundaries also asks for being nurtured and loved “for free”; and therefore my friend and me may enjoy fantasizing about being in a bad situation - don’t you usually get lots of sympathetic words and care from others? This could be considered as “free nurture and care and love”.

Am I strange and do I have issues, or am I not as unique as I think I am?
Please give me your opinion!
